My coworker in my office recently referred to his friend who works for Luxshare – ICT that Apple ramp up the production of Airpods in Vietnam since March 2020.
Nikkei also reports about this matter and the Luxshare – ICT (Van Trung) would produce 3 or 4 million units, of which 30% will be Airpods ($159 on Amazon) – The remaining units will be the Airpods Pro Lite, the model that Apple will release later this year.
Apple determined with support from Vietnam government to ease restriction of foreign engineers entering the country, it would diversity the production sites to keep up with the demand.
A couple of local articles citing that the Luxshare – ICT (the company located in Viet Yen District, Bac Giang Province, a total area of 163,200 –square-meters) expanded their production sites and hired more workers.
The information also reported that Luxshare will resemble the AirPods Studio – Apple’s first over ear Bluetooth headphone in mid-2020.
China with their huge global supply chain seems to be irreplaceable, but recent increase in minimum wages and trade war big companies have to rethink diversifying their supply chains out of China.
And Vietnam, a neighboring country is an alternative base to China, but the country’s current infrastructure, transportation, and workers and logistics are barriers hindering the process of moving factories from China to Vietnam. But that’s is a bigger picture, for making headsets things could be less complicated.
Airpods and Airpods Pro Lite
Airpods are the best selling true wireless earbuds because they don’t rely on Bluetooth chip processors such as Qualcomm, giving iPhone users seamless experience with the product.
Airpods Pro Lite is exactly the same as Airpods Pro but without the noise cancelling feature, so Airpods Pro Lite is expected to last longer and lighter. And think their sound quality is the same.
If you have check Airpods Teardown you would see they are involved a lot of hardware and components, battery pack for charging case, drivers, acoustic components and so on. While the Luxshare – ICT can produce Airpods’ plastic housings it will have to vitally import components from other countries to resemble.
